Emotions Vocabulary: How to Express Your Feelings in Italian

Being able to talk about emotions and feelings accurately is one of the signs that you are really fluent in a language. Read on to learn how to express how you feel in Italian, one of the most emotionally expressive languages in the world.

Phrases to ask how someone is feeling

There are three main ways to express how you feel.

Nervous

Note that “nervous” doesn’t correspond to nervoso, which means “irritable” in Italian.

Ho un esame domani, sono molto agitato

Giù di corda

The expression “giù di corda” (literally “down on string”) describes a general lack of motivation and energy.

Fare piacere

To express happiness or satisfaction in Italian you can use the impersonal expression “fare piacere” (literally: to make pleasure). It roughly corresponds to “to appreciate” or “to be glad” in English.

This expression has to be conjugated in the same way you would conjugate the verb piacere (to like, to appreciate).

Mi fa piacere	I’m glad
Ti fa piacere	You are glad
Gli/le fa piacere	He/she/it is glad
Ci fa piacere	We are glad
Vi fa piacere	Y’all are glad
Gli fa piacere	They are glad
